Finding the Right Trigger
The best BG recommendations do not start with "what can I add?" They start with "what evidence do we have?" A legitimate trigger is what turns a product pitch into professional advice.
Learn the six clean triggers for recommending BG maintenance: mileage, time, fluid condition, symptoms, repair context, and ownership history.
The Six Legitimate Triggers
| Trigger | What to look for | Advisor example |
|---|---|---|
| Mileage | Vehicle is at or past a recommended maintenance interval. | "You are at 62,000 miles and we do not show a transmission service in history." |
| Time | Fluid ages even when mileage is low, especially brake fluid and coolant. | "The miles are low, but brake fluid is time-sensitive too. It has been over three years." |
| Fluid condition | Dark, contaminated, acidic, low, burnt smell, failed strip/test. | "The tech noted the coolant is testing acidic, which means the corrosion protection is worn down." |
| Symptoms | Rough idle, reduced fuel economy, hard shifting, pump noise, poor pedal feel. | "You mentioned a rough idle. The fuel service is one of the maintenance steps that addresses buildup." |
| Repair context | A related repair is already being done. | "Since we are already replacing pads, this is the right time to exchange the brake fluid too." |
| Ownership history | Unknown history, recently purchased used vehicle, no prior records. | "Since you just bought it and we do not know the service history, this is one of the baseline services I would consider." |
The Weak Triggers
These are the reasons that make customers feel sold instead of advised:
- "We recommend it to everybody."
- "It's a good idea."
- "The system says it is due" with no explanation.
- "My manager wants us to sell more maintenance."
- "It comes with protection" before verifying eligibility.
If an advisor cannot name the trigger, coach the recommendation before coaching the close. Weak closes usually start with weak reasons.
The 30-Second Pre-Call Check
Before calling the customer, ask yourself:
- What did the tech see or test?
- What does the service protect?
- What is the customer risk if they defer?
- Is this tied to a current repair or maintenance interval?
- Where does this belong in the menu?
"The brake fluid tested high for contamination, and we are already replacing pads. I added the BG brake fluid exchange in Better because it handles the hydraulic side while we are servicing the friction side."
Checklist: Before You Recommend BG
The Dyer Standard
Every BG recommendation must have a trigger. No trigger, no pitch. Find the reason first; the sale follows the reason.
